The m&m commercial campaign is a good example of a cg character in real world, The level of realism has definitely improved greatly from the early nineties to now.
On of the newer M&M commercials
This is the direction I am thinking about going, the character design is simple, but yet animates very well. I would love to create something similar to the small clips shown above, a short clip of a completely cg character interacting with something in the real footage.
In Peter Jackson’s remake of the the classic 1920s giant gorilla movie, we are introduced to a fully CG main character. Kong is a 30ft gorilla, most of us are fully aware of the fact that there is no such creature in existence, however as we watch him on screen there is no point in which the illusion is broken. He looks as real as if there actually was a 30 foot gorilla on film. Since the illusion is never broken then it leaves us more willing to take the journey, that the story is trying to take us on.
Weta really did a phenomenal job with Kong, both breaking new ground aesthetically, the way they tackled the fur simulation, and in animation, the body and face animation was just amazing.
